Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
Assam's Premier Multi Superspeciality Hospital
About Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
Minimally invasive opening of blocked heart arteries with a balloon and stent, without open-heart surgery.
Coronary artery disease narrows or blocks the arteries that supply the heart muscle, causing chest pain (angina) or a heart attack. PTCA, commonly called angioplasty, opens the blocked artery from inside using a thin tube passed through the wrist or groin.
A small balloon is inflated at the blockage and a stent (a tiny mesh tube) is usually placed to keep the artery open. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and most patients go home within a day or two. Emergency (primary) angioplasty is the preferred treatment for many heart attacks.
Who can benefit?
- Angina (chest pain) due to blocked coronary arteries
- Acute heart attack (primary angioplasty)
- Significant blockages seen on coronary angiography
- Re-narrowing after a previous stent
What we offer at NENC
- Coronary angiography (CAG) to locate blockages
- Balloon angioplasty and drug-eluting stents
- Radial (wrist) access where possible
- Emergency primary angioplasty for heart attacks
- Cardiac care unit monitoring and cardiac rehabilitation advice
